Charles Connell was born in Northampton in 1810 to Charles Connell Sr. and Mary Palmer. He received his education at a public school in Northampton and established himself as a successful businessman in Woodstock, where he became one of Carleton County's leading lumbermen. In 1835, he married Ann Fisher, and they had seven children.
Mr. Connell was
nominated as a candidate in Carleton County and emerged victorious. He held a seat in the House of Assembly, a position on the Executive Council, and the office of Post Master General simultaneously.
One of Charles Connell's initial actions, in his role as Postmaster General, was to introduce daily mail service between Saint John and New Brunswick.
