Before hitting the road, it’s crucial to prepare your vehicle adequately. Be sure to check all your vehicle’s fluid levels, such as the oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid. Checking the coolant levels is also important in order to prevent overheating.
As we know the weather in NB can fluctuate quite a bit, even in the summer months. When the temperature rises the air inside a tire expands, causing the pressure to increase. Conversely, cooler temperatures cause the air to contract, leading to lower tire pressure. Monitoring tire pressure helps optimize fuel efficiency, as well as traction on the road. Regular
maintenance not only reduces the risk of breakdowns but can also help prevent an accident from happening.
If you should become involved in an accident during your trip, it’s important to make sure you’re properly covered! Talk to one of our licensed Account Managers for a review of your policy to ensure you’re getting the coverages and endorsements you’re entitled to. Stay safe and enjoy your summer adventures knowing your car is in top condition and covered by reliable insurance. As
your trusted insurance provider, we understand the excitement of summer road trips and want to ensure your journey is smooth and worry-free. Together, We Are Stronger.
Christ Church Cathedral Where Hank Williams and Big Ben Collide!
Stanley Mutual recently had the opportunity to host the 2024 Maritime Association of Mutual Insurance Companies annual convention, welcoming mutual companies from the Maritimes to our province and the beautiful city of Fredericton. This event allowed us to become tourists in our own backyard for a few days, and we had the privilege of touring Christ Church Cathedral, in downtown Fredericton.
Our tour guide was the exuberant Hank Williams. As he humorously clarified, he's not that Hank Williams. This Mr. Williams served as the Verger at the Cathedral for 18 years and now gives tours, sharing his extensive knowledge of every nook, cranny, and hidden story within the Cathedral walls.
During our tour, we learned that the Cathedral's clock is a prototype of Big Ben in London. The clock dial, located above the choir, measures four feet in diameter. The clock mechanism itself is just above, in the tower, designed by Dent of London, UK, and built in 1853 before being installed in 1854. Remarkably, the clock still needs to be hand-wound, a task currently undertaken by three different people on a
monthly basis. The weights that drive the clock measure approximately 454 kg (1,000 lbs.) and 136 kg (300 lbs.) separately. To access the room housing the clock and bell mechanisms, one must climb a narrow spiral staircase of 51 steps, followed by a very narrow wooden ladder to reach the 15 bells. The clock’s hour strike no longer rings, having been stopped in 2007 due to noise complaints from neighbors. However, the chimes still ring the Westminster chime to mark the quarter
hours.
If you look closely you can see the clock above the arch in the photo above. The Cathedral was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1983. According to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board, it is "one of the best examples of ecclesiological Gothic Revival architecture in Canada," establishing an architectural pattern followed in the design of many
large and small churches in 19th-century Canada. Next time you are in downtown Fredericton, be sure to stop by Christ Church Cathedral, or better yet, coordinate a tour with Hank Williams—you won’t regret it.
