🔎 Kicking off the series – #5 in our countdown: Ruptured Hot Water Tanks 🔧
Ruptured hot water tanks
may seem like an unlikely problem, but they’re one of the most common claims we see. A failing tank can cause serious water damage to your home, but regular maintenance can help prevent this!
Here’s how to keep your hot water tank in top condition:
Flush the tank regularly to remove sediment buildup and improve efficiency.
Inspect for leaks around the base and pipes to catch issues early.
Check the pressure
relief valve to ensure it's functioning properly and preventing excess pressure.
Replace your tank every 15 years for optimal performance. If your tank is leased, the replacement is free – simply contact NB Power to make arrangements.
Additionally, if your tank is from NB Power and you have any concerns, please
reach out to them directly for service.
By staying on top of these tasks, you can help prevent costly damages and keep your home safe!

Embracing Our Roots
New Brunswick Facts
We are home to the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere.
One of the most dramatic demonstrations of the power of the tides is found in the Western Passage of Passamaquoddy Bay, near the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. “Old Sow” is the largest whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere and the second largest in the world—surpassed only by Norway’s Maelstrom Whirlpool.
The Old Sow Whirlpool, located off the shores of Deer Island in southern
New Brunswick, is a mesmerizing natural phenomenon driven by the region’s extreme tidal range. Formed by the powerful tidal exchange between the Bay of Fundy and Passamaquoddy Bay, Old Sow is further intensified by the unique seafloor topography beneath its swirling waters. Named for the pig-like sounds it produces, this whirlpool has long fascinated visitors and scientists alike.

When is the best time to see Old Sow?
The whirlpool is most active about three hours before high tide, with turbulent
waters continuing for roughly two hours. During this time, you’ll witness an array of gyres, troughs, spouts, and holes. Occasionally, these smaller features merge into a single large funnel, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle. Old Sow’s activity peaks during spring tides—caused by a full or new moon—when high winds or tidal surges amplify its swirling intensity.
For the best views, head to Deer Point on Deer Island or Moose Island, where you can also spot smaller whirlpools
in the surrounding waters.
This remarkable natural wonder is especially impressive in the spring when extreme tides create a truly otherworldly display. Its raw power and unpredictability have even earned it features in Lonely Planet and Smithsonian Magazine.
Whether you're drawn by curiosity, science, or sheer awe, witnessing Old Sow is an unforgettable experience—one that showcases the extraordinary forces of nature at work in southern New Brunswick.
